The summer PCS car buying timeline

Last updated 21 September 2026 · part of the Vicenza car-buying guide

Car prices in a military community do not follow the seasons that move prices at home. They follow the rotation. Understanding that one fact is worth more than any negotiating tactic, because it tells you which side of the table has leverage in any given month — and it is not always the same side.

Why the rotation sets the price

Most families out-process in late spring and summer. Each of them has a car they must dispose of by a fixed date, and that date does not move. At the same time, the incoming families who would buy those cars are arriving across the same months but slightly behind — they are still in temporary lodging, still waiting on a licence test.

The result is a brief, reliable mismatch: a glut of sellers who cannot wait, meeting buyers who are not quite ready. That gap is where the deals are, and it closes fast.

If you are buying

If you are selling

Month by month

Jan – FebQuietest market of the year. Few listings, few buyers. Good time to research, poor time to transact either way.
Mar – MayBest window to sell. Early movers list; arrivals are buying. Competition among sellers is still low.
Jun – AugBest window to buy. Peak supply, and by late summer peak urgency among sellers. Worst time to be selling.
Sep – OctMarket clears. Leftovers are leftovers for a reason — inspect carefully.
Nov – DecThin. Dealer stock matters more than the community market; new factory orders are unaffected by any of this.

Where the dealers fit

Dealer inventory is much less seasonal than private sales — they buy and sell year-round, so a thin community market does not mean a thin market overall. In autumn and winter the dealers are usually the better option simply because they have stock when nobody else does. And new factory orders through the military sales programmes ignore the cycle entirely: the lead time is the lead time whatever month you order in.

How to tell where a seller actually is

The whole game is reading the other side's deadline, and there are honest signals for it:

None of this is adversarial. Both sides know the cycle; a departing family would usually rather sell at a fair number to someone arriving than gamble on a dealer trade-in in their final fortnight.

Doing both in the same summer

Plenty of people are selling one car and buying another across the same few months, and the two halves pull in opposite directions — the window that is good for one is bad for the other. Sequence it rather than running both at once:

The one rule

Decouple your purchase from your need. Every expensive mistake in this market comes from having to buy a car this week. Bridge the gap with a rental, arrive knowing the price level, and let the timing work for you instead of against you — because in a community where everyone moves on the same schedule, the person who is not in a hurry is the person who wins.

Seasonal patterns describe the community market and can be thrown off by a large unit rotation. PCS Wheels is not affiliated with USAG Italy or the Department of Defense; see the official Vicenza PCS guide for out-processing timelines.
